Jane Birkin's original Hermès Bag sells at Auction for €8.6 million.

Drawn on an airplane sickness bag, the very first Birkin handbag — the prototype for what would become one of fashion’s most iconic accessories — fetched an astonishing €8.6 million ($15.29 million AUD) at auction in Paris on Thursday, 11th July, making it the second most expensive fashion piece ever sold under the hammer.

The €7 million winning bid stunned the crowd, met with audible gasps and a round of applause. The sale shattered the previous handbag auction record, which stood at $513,040 for a Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28 sold in 2021.

Now in a category of its own, the original Birkin — named after actress, singer, and style icon Jane Birkin, for whom Hermès originally designed the bag — is only outranked by one fashion item: the famous ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, which sold for a record-breaking $US32.5 million ($49.43 million AUD) in 2024, according to Sotheby’s.

Style advice

Simple outfit? No worries! Jewellery and accessories can make the outfit. Also, remember the 70/30 rule: 70% basic staple items, 30% bright and fun pieces, and don't forget colour theory!
